Description:
Explore the history of central Australia, from its earliest inhabitants to the present day, on this comprehensive 4-day tour. See landmarks of European settlements in Alice Springs, visit enduring symbols of the region at Uluru and Kata Tjuta, and learn about a culture that goes back for millennia.
Day 1:
Start with a tour of one of the largest towns in the Outback. Visit the historic Telegraph Station, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and the School of the Air, and see unique central Australian reptiles like the perentie and thorny dragon at the Alice Springs Reptile Park. Finish the day with panoramic views of the town and the MacDonnell Ranges from the top of Anzac Hill.
Day 2:
Travel through the West MacDonnell and James Ranges. Visit a camel farm, where you can buy a ride and try the mode of transportation brought to Australia by 19th-century immigrants from British India. Later, stop for a view of the majestic Mount Conner before you arrive at Ayers Rock Resort.
In the afternoon, head out to see the 36 natural domes of Kata Tjuta. Hike through Walpa Gorge for a closer look at the unusual conglomerate rock formations, as the walking trail follows a natural creek between two of Kata Tjuta's tallest domes. In the late afternoon, travel to the Uluru sunset viewing area and witness the striking colors that light the immense stone formation as evening falls.
Day 3:
After a visit to the Uluru sunrise viewing area, Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, join your guide for a tour around the base of Uluru, and then take a ride to visit the charming Mutitjulu Waterhole. View Aboriginal rock paintings and learn about the area as your guide shares insight into its Aboriginal and European history.
Before you return to Ayers Rock Resort, visit the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre to learn more about Aboriginal culture and see Aboriginal arts and crafts. On days when the Uluru Climb is open, you can choose to spend the day's morning climbing Uluru instead.
Day 4:
Your tour concludes with a ride to the airport in Ayers Rock.
