Description:

Journey back in time to the Fiji of a bygone era with a full-day visit to the 200-year-old village of Navala. Admire the authentic thatched roof bures (homes) and learn about the villagers' traditional way of life as you participate in a kava ceremony and visit the local market and school.

After you're picked up from your hotel, ride inland toward the Ba Highlands, leaving the beaches of the coast behind for the lush valleys and verdant hillsides of Viti Levu's interior. Pass through the agricultural town of Ba and cross over the river to arrive in the village of Navala, a cluster of more than 200 bures nestled within a mountainous landscape.

Roughly 1,000 villagers call Navala home, and they still follow a traditional Fijian way of living. Join in a kava ceremony to be formally welcomed into the village, and then spend some time mingling with the locals and snapping photos of the charming setting and authentic architecture of the bures. Visit the village market and learn how the locals harvest wild fruits and yams, hunt for wild pigs in the jungle, and grow their own roots and vegetables nearby.

Visit the school—one of the only structures in the village that is not built in the traditional bure style—and then sit down to enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh Fijian cuisine. Listen to legends and ancestral tales over the course of the meal, and then head back to your coach and return to the bustle of modern civilization.
