Description:

Visit the city of San Cristobal along the southern coastline where the island meets the Caribbean Sea. Admire the rock formations inside the Pomier Caves and stop for lunch before visiting a 16th-century sugar mill and plantation.

Venture to San Cristobal, the birthplace of Rafael Trujillo, a ruthless dictator in power during the 1900s, and view some of the many monuments he had constructed on your way to the caves. Explore some of the 55 caves that make up Pomier, which houses the largest collection of cave drawings by the indigenous Taino people.

After lunch and some time to take a break at the Ecological Ranch, head to Engombe Sugar Mill, nominated as a possible World Heritage site. With your guide, explore the grounds including the remains of the palatial mansion and chapel. Originally constructed in 1532, this sugar mill and plantation once housed almost 200 workers churning out sugar, a precious island commodity.
