Description:
Rottnest Island may be known today for its balmy waters, prime snorkeling, and tiny kangaroos, but this island off the coast of Perth has a much more storied past. Discover Rottnest's military history at Oliver Hill, ride a scenic train, and then soak up the island's natural beauty on this outing.
Sail out of Swan River and across a cobalt stretch of the Indian Ocean to the low-lying, sandy outcrop of Rottnest Island—Rotto for short. Step onto the jetty, watching the rugged shore for native shorebirds and even a resident colony of fur seals basking in the sun.
Climb aboard the Captain Hussey and chug along this historic railway, built in 1935 as part of Australia's strategic defense during World War II. The train is a tourist attraction today, but was originally devised as a means of transporting munitions to the guns on top of Oliver Hill. Set out for a guided exploration of the Rottness Island Fortress to tour bunkers and underground tunnels and gaze into the barrel of a massive 9.2-inch (23.4-cm) Mk X gun. Along the way, listen as your guide shares insight into the island's military history—it served as an internment and work camp for suspected enemies during both World Wars.
Today, that dark chapter of the island's history is decidedly closed, and Rotto is a favorite destination for beach-goers, wildlife lovers, and sun-seekers from the mainland. After your tour, spend some time take a breaking in the sun on 1 of the island's 63 sandy beaches, trekking along its walking trails in search of the adorable quokka kangaroo, or looking out from the Wadjemup Lighthouse to spy pods of whales and dolphins in the waves.
