Description:
Visit locations that helped bring The Lord of the Rings to life as part of this 4-day adventure to Rotorua and its surroundings. See hobbit-holes and the Green Dragon Inn, follow a local guide through the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, and learn about Maori traditions at Te Puia.
Day 1:
Leave Auckland behind for a tour through the amazing limestone formations of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. During a calm boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto, you can see the caves by the light of thousands of tiny glowworms.
Next, enjoy a picnic-style lunch on your coach as you ride across the Central North Island into the lands of Middle-earth. Visit the hills near Matamata that became the set for Hobbiton in the epic trilogies of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. See exquisitely detailed buildings, including Bag End, the Mill, and the Green Dragon Inn before you head back to your hotel in Rotorua.
Day 2:
In the morning, visit Te Puia, New Zealand's living Maori cultural center, at the edge of the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley. See master carvers and weavers practicing their traditional crafts, and then travel out to the spectacular landscape of geysers, steam, and bubbling pools of boiling mud.
Continue your tour to Rainbow Springs Nature Park and get up close to native birds, fish, reptiles, and other animals. Explore New Zealand's agricultural industry at the Agrodome, take a scenic lunch cruise around Lake Rotorua on a historic paddle boat, and head back to Rorotorua for a unique dinner with hāngi cuisine and a concert on a Maori communal site.
Day 3:
Have free time to explore Rotorua on your own. In the afternoon, your coach takes you back to Auckland for your overnight stay at a local hotel.
Day 4:
After your breakfast, your tour concludes with a transfer to Auckland Airport.
