Description:
Spend 3 full days exploring a slice of coastal heaven on this walking trip through the Bay of Fires. With meals, accommodation, and even luggage transportation handled for you, you can focus on reveling in the deserted beauty of this far-flung wilderness.
On Tasmania's northeastern coast, the untouched landscapes of the Bay of Fires are part national park and part designated conservation area. An informative guide leads you across this remote, littoral terrain, a helpful crew pitches your tents and transports your bags, and meals accompanied by Ninth Island wines bring each day to a delicious close.
Day 1
Travel via coach from Launceston to Mount William National Park. Begin your walking adventure, covering approximately 8 miles (13 km) of terrain. Pass by Boulder Point and the Cobler Rocks, and watch for wombats, kangaroos, and even Tasmanian devils on the marsupial lawns at Cod Bay. Arrive at your campsite, where walk-in tents are already set up and your bags are waiting. Hot bush showers are available, and dinner and wine are served fireside.
Day 2
Today's 6.5-hour walk covers 9 miles (14 km) between Deep Creek and Ansons Bay. The historic pink lighthouse at Eddystone Point beckons you into the Bay of Fires Conservation Area. Watch for wombats and spiny echidnas in the brush, crested terns swooping for crabs, and even dolphins leaping offshore. Tonight's accommodations are at a beachfront lodge, where dinner is served outdoors with views of the bay.
Day 3
Your final day of trekking covers 7 miles (11 km) between Ansons Bay and The Gardens. Pass coastal pools and sculptural twists of driftwood on the bone-white sands of Break Yake Beach and Garden Lagoon Beach, and then stop for lunch amid the orange-hued, lichen-colored rocks. Give your legs a rest as you ride into the fishing village of St Helens, where you can reward yourself with a pastry and coffee at Banjo's before your trip back to Launceston.
