The UNESCO-listed center of Salzburg is undoubtedly 1 of the most photogenic in Europe. This gem of a city oozes charm. Explore with a local guide and hear stories that bring its history to life. Your morning starts with the 17th-century grandeur of Mirabell Palace and its charmingly landscaped gardens.
Your route, together with some of the major sights of the Old Town, includes such landmarks as the Mozarteum, 1 of the most prestigious music academies in the world, the former residence of the famous composer Mozart, and the mighty Church of the Holy Trinity. Make sure not to miss Hellbrunn Palace, Nonnberg Abbey, and the Festival Halls either.
After a short break, cross the Salzach river and head to the verdant Alpine landscapes of the Salzkammergut region for the afternoon. Deep blue lakes are surrounded by forested mountain peaks, creating a picture-perfect, rural idyll. Visit the enchanting villages of St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang and pass by the 14th-century Hüttenstein Castle. Be sure to admire the scenic beauty of Mondsee, made famous by Ian Flemming in 1 of his James Bond novels.
