Description:
Delve into Mexico City’s rich cultural history with a guided tour of its major sites and landmarks, and then take a look at Mexico’s pre-Columbian heritage with an informative visit to the Museo Nacional de Antropologia.
Your tour begins at Zocalo—also known as Plaza de la Constitucion. This sprawling square was the main ceremonial center of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan and is still the heartbeat of modern Mexico City. Admire the Art Nouveau exterior of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and then head into the National Palace.
This centuries-old edifice on the site of Moctezuma’s one-time residence is decorated with murals by Diego Rivera, depicting Mexico’s history from 1521 to 1930. Study the celebrated works, then cross the plaza to the Catedral Metropolitana—the largest cathedral in Latin America. Portions of this Gothic structure date back to 1573.
Next, hit the stalls at an arts and crafts market to shop for wares by local artisans—from wool rugs and blankets to silver jewelry and traditional pottery. Ride down the Paseo de la Reforma toward the sprawling urban park of the Bosque de Chapultepec, which houses the Museo Nacional de Antropologia.
Explore the museum’s Aztec Hall for a look at artifacts from pre-hispanic Mayan populations, and explore the mythology, lifestyle, and customs of Mexico’s various regions and cultures. Admire a massive basalt Aztec calendar, a reconstruction of a Mayan tomb, and a replica of Moctezuma’s feathered headdress before your tour concludes.
