Description:

Step onto the African savannah without ever leaving Australia at the Werribee Open Range Zoo. This 500-acre (200-ha) park is home to iconic grasslands animals from the world over—from gorillas, lions, and zebras, to Australian bush creatures like kangaroos and bandicoots.

Just 30 minutes from Melbourne, the Werribee Open Range Zoo transports you to the wild habitat of the African plains.

Make your way through the Botswana bush. The meerkats are standing at the ready to sound the alarm if the majestic pride of lions approaches the waterhole. In the African wetlands, watch 5 lumbering hippos as they squish and splash through mud wallows and deep pools. The littlest safari-goers can get in on the action at an interactive archaeological dig site and a water play area.

Watch silverback Motaba and his 2 sons at Gorillas Calling, and then mimic their moves at a play space filled with tree trunks and ropes. Next, grab a seat for a keeper-led demonstration showcasing the amazingly agile and charmingly spotted serval.

Set out along the Wirribi River Walking Trail for a journey through the Australian grasslands, watching for koalas, kangaroos, emus, and platypuses in the fields and along the riverbank. Young visitors can put their spy skills to the test as they track down Baz the Bandicoot, and then head to the Ranger Kids indoor play area. Care for plush animals in the African village, and rush them to the field hospital via a high-flying ride in a wooden helicopter.
