Soak up the sun, scenery, and vibrant wine culture of South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula. Tour McLaren Vale wineries, chat with vintners, and take in the breathtaking coastal landscapes with a glass of wine in hand on this indulgent and informative full-day outing.
A local guide picks you up and describes the region's winemaking history during the quick, 40-minute drive toward McLaren Vale. Mostly comprised of family-run and boutique wineries, McLaren Vale has been a viticultural hub since the mid-19th century, and today produces some of Australia's best-known bottles. Ride over off-road tracks to hidden locales and wineries that can only be accessed by 4-wheel drive, admiring the bushland scenery and keeping your eyes peeled for native wildlife like kangaroos along the way.
Stop at a small estate and listen in as the winemaker and growers share their stories. Learn all about harvesting methods and the area's terroir—the unique features of the soil that imbue wine with its distinctive character. Sip and swirl varietals like shiraz and chardonnay as you tour the historic stone cellar. In the grand barrel hall, lined with aged casks crafted from aromatic French oak, sample wine straight from the barrel. If you want to get in on the action, you can even try your hand at blending your own bottle to take home as a sumptuous souvenir.
Head back out into the bush and ride up to a viewpoint high in the Willunga Hills, looking out over the southern vales and the azure waters of Gulf St Vincent. Watch for whales in the distance and lift a glass of bubbly to your day in what the locals affectionately refer to as “The Vale.”
