Description:
Enjoy a spectacular sunrise and marvel at the beauty of Maui's Haleakala summit and crater before embarking on a guided bike ride down the world's largest resting volcano. Pickup from your hotel is early but pastries and hot beverages help ease you into the experience.
Travel by van into Haleakala National Park and to the top of the world's largest dormant volcano—Haleakala—at 10,023 feet (3,055 m). Steel yourself against the chilly high-elevation temperature as the sun creeps slowly into the sky. Once a spectacular island sunrise starts to brighten and warm your surroundings, marvel at Haleakala's enormous crater and the area's otherworldly flora.
Afterward, head down 6,500 feet (1,980 m) just outside the park. Get on your bike and coast along behind your guide to learn about the history of Haleakala. See rare silversword plants—as well as native, endangered animals and birds that have made Haleakala their permanent home—before stopping for lunch (own expense) at a upcountry location.
Next, navigate 21 twisting turns on the western slopes of Haleakala without even breaking a sweat. With only 200 yards (183 m) of pedaling to grapple with, the cycling part of your tour is almost entirely downhill, leaving you free to enjoy the panoramic views.
