Description:

Venture into the lush countryside outside of Manzanillo to explore tropical fruit plantations, visit the traditional fishing village of Barra de Navidad, and hear local accounts of meteorological miracles at the church that houses the Christ of the Fallen Arms.

After being picked up at your hotel, pass through the verdant hill country at the foot of the Sierra Madres, cruising by orchards of mango and lime trees and fields of chili peppers and coconuts. Stop at a banana plantation to learn about the cultivation of this tropical fruit.

Then make your way to Barra de Navidad. This sleepy coastal village on a hidden sandbar is home to a more traditional way of life than in busy Manzanillo—many of its residents still farm and fish for a living. Explore the market stands, stroll the calm beach and tranquil downtown, and watch fishermen hauling in their catches in Christmas Lagoon.

In the whitewashed Parroquia de San Antonio, note El Cristo de los Brazos Caidos above the altar. The broken arms of this Christ on the crucifix are the miraculous stuff of legend—believers hold that during 1971's Hurricane Lily, the arms broke and the winds and rains of the stormy tempest instantly abated.

End your visit with a walk along the beachfront malecon—from this seaside esplanade you can see out to the rocky outcrop of Isla Navidad before your return trip to Manzanillo.
