Description:

Put your finger on the urban pulse of Managua with a private tour of its historical sites, architectural landmarks, and controversial cathedral, then chat about the capital city's culture and history over a steaming cup of Nicaraguan coffee.

After being picked up from your hotel, begin your tour at the Acahualinca Footprints Museum, where you can see the fossilized footprints of humans and animals fleeing a volcanic eruption some 10,000 years ago. From there, make your way to the Old Cathedral. Shipped from Belgium in 1920, this noble edifice was condemned after the 1972 earthquake.

Pass by the Casa Presidencial and then stroll the rebuilt waterfront along the shores of Lake Xolotlán to the Mercado Central. Here, browse the stalls for traditional crafts, then admire the colonnaded façade of the National Palace of Culture, which houses an extensive collection of Nicaraguan art.

Soak up the Old World atmosphere and fresh air in some of the city's green spaces, including Parque Central, Loma de Tiscapa for views of a distant volcano, and Parque de la Paz, built to commemorate the end of the Contra conflict.

From the Ruben Dario National Theater—one of few buildings to survive the 1972 quake—head to the Metropolitan Cathedral. This modern pink structure is adorned with unusual cupolas, earning it the local nickname La Chichona.

Finally, make your way to a coffee shop to enjoy a flavorful cup of Nicaraguan coffee while you take in views over the crater lake of Laguna de Nejapa.
