Kuranda is just 16 miles (25 km) from bustling Cairns, but with its lush greenery and exotic wildlife, it feels a world apart. Take it all in with a Duck tour over dirt roads and tropical lakes, an aboriginal Dreamtime Walk, a look at native animals, and a scenic ride on the Rainforest Cableway.

Tropical birdsong and the mist-shrouded foliage of the rainforest surround you during a morning at Rainforestation Nature Park—part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Site. Set out for an amphibious ride on an open-air Duck vehicle for an up-close look at the rainforest by land and by water.

Pass through a tropical fruit orchard, traverse a turtle-filled lake, and then take a seat for the Pamagirri Corroboree. This dance—performed to the sounds of the didgeridoo and clapsticks—introduces you to aboriginal customs and beliefs. After the show, set out with an indigenous guide for a Dreamtime Walk and a lesson in boomerang throwing.

At the Koala and Wildlife Park, feed a kangaroo and watch for an elusive cassowary strutting through the brush. Afterward, enjoy some free time in Kuranda. Your afternoon concludes with a breathtaking ride on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. The waters of the Coral Sea glimmer in the distance as you glide over 4.6 miles (7.5 km) of pristine rainforest canopy in a gondola. Disembark at Red Peak to walk by giant ferns on the ancient forest floor, and at Barron Falls Station, trek to a viewpoint overlooking the incredible flow of this powerful cascade.
