After you’re picked up from your hotel, sit back and enjoy the vistas as you are driven toward Prambanan. Upon arrival at this UNESCO World Heritage Site—the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia—your guide leads you on an exploration, offering narration on the construction, mythology, and symbolism of the temples. This 9th-century complex is comprised of hundreds of structures surrounding the main Shiva temple, a soaring spire reaching 154 feet (47 m) above the trees.

Next, head to the town of Surakarta, known more commonly as Solo, where you visit Mangkunegaran Palace. This impressive pura was built in the 18th century, and the royal family still resides in the back of the palace. Tour the rest of this fascinating space, admiring the extensive collection of jewelry, silver, Javanese weapons, and dancers’ accessories.

Lunch takes place at an authentic Javanese restaurant, where a delicious and freshly prepared meal is accompanied by live gamelan music. Your final stop is Sukuh Temple. This structure, with its distinctive carvings in motifs of fertility and sexuality, is set amid splendid mountainous scenery almost 3,000 feet (910 m) above sea level.
