Description:
The wonders of northern Australia form a spectacular setting for this 4-day tour into the wild tropical expanse. From Aboriginal rock paintings to crocodiles on the Yellow Water Billabong, charming townships, or the waters of Katherine Gorge, see the broad range of environments within the Top End.
Day 1:
Pass the Adelaide River and Marrakai Plains on your way into Kakadu National Park. Take a guided walk to see Aboriginal rock paintings at Burrunggui, often known as Nourlangie Rock, and have lunch before you join the famous Yellow Water Billabong Cruise to see the birds and saltwater crocodiles that make the area home. Visit the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre to round out the day.
Day 2:
In the morning, stop at Ubirr with a short walk to see the ancient rock art at Ubirr, including pieces that have been painted and repainted for 42,000 years. Next, join the Guluyambi Cruise for a chance to see saltwater crocodiles along the East Alligator River. With an Aboriginal guide and special permission from the local people, you have the rare opportunity to go ashore in Arnhem Land.
Visit the Bowali Visitor Centre before returning to Darwin in the evening.
Day 3:
Follow the Stuart Highway out of Darwin, passing through the township of Batchelor on your way to Litchfield National Park. You can take a scenic walk through the bush and monsoon vine forest, get a look at Florence Falls, and go swimming in the plunge pool below.
Next, get a magnificent view of the cascading water at Tolmer Falls. When you visit Wangi Falls, you can choose to go swimming again or take a steady climb through the rainforest to reach the top of the falls. Enjoy a picnic lunch and get plenty of interesting photos of the scenery, including the amazing termite mounds.
Day 4:
Travel south past former World War II airstrips and make a short stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, dedicated to those killed in the air raids that struck Darwin in the 1940s. Continue to Edith Falls, where you might take a refreshing swim in the waterhole beneath the falls. After lunch, a 2-hour scenic cruise takes you through Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park.
Enjoy a brief tour of Katherine, the hub of the region's cattle and farming industries, and make an evening stop at Adelaide River before returning to Darwin.
