Experience the past and present of South Africa on this bike tour through the vibrant Soweto area of Johannesburg. Ride through Soweto’s historic streets, enjoy a traditional South African lunch, and peek into the former homes of 2 Nobel Peace Prize laureates.

Depart from the Carlton Centre, where you can take in dazzling, bird's-eye views of Johannesburg from the 50th floor. Next, hop on the tour bus to travel to the Apartheid Museum, where 20th-century Africa is brought to life by various exhibitions. Learn about the state of racial segregation that existed from 1948 to 1994, and experience Apartheid-era racial classification firsthand as you're given your own identification papers to carry through the museum’s many exhibits.

Climb back on the bus and head to a Soweto-proper restaurant to indulge in a mid-day spread of local specialty dishes. Post-meal, traverse the streets of Soweto by bike—home to all 11 of the country’s official languages—and try to tune into passing dialects of Zulu, the Dutch-based Afrikaans, or Southern Ndebele.

Stop at a former migrant workers' hostel for men, and hear about their daily lives. Then cycle past the location of the 1976 student uprising—the Hector Pieterson memorial site—which commemorates the role of the country’s students in the struggle against apartheid before pedaling down Vilakazi Street to see Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu's former homes.
