Description:
Leave the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur for a change of scenery at the former mining city of Ipoh and the royal town of Kuala Kangsar. Admire the majestic mixture of colonial architecture as well as contemporary buildings and visit the prominent kopitiam to savor tasty local cuisine.
After being picked up from your hotel, enjoy a 2-hour scenic drive north of Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh, home to what were once the richest tin mines in the world. Upon arrival, visit the historical Ipoh Railway Station, designed by a British architect, and take a look at its surmounted Moorish domes and turrets which earned its nickname, the Taj Mahal of Malaysia.
Drive past the city center and along your way get a glimpse of the charming neoclassical styles of colonial architecture such as the old post office, Birch memorial, and town hall. Then, stop for a delicious traditional lunch at the original Old Town White Coffee, a local kopitiam (coffee house) that was established in 1999 and became the largest coffee chain in the country.
As you arrive in Kuala Kangsar, the royal town of Perak, view the magnificent Ubudiah Mosque, the white Indo-Saracenic building embellished with Moorish arches, black-and-white striped minarets, and golden domes. Before returning to Kuala Lumpur, head to Istana Iskandariah, or the Sultan’s Palace, and admire the massive marble structure and its series of towers topped by onion-shaped golden domes.
