Description:

In a small group, take a scenic drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Kīlauea volcano—one of the most active volcanoes in the world. A stop at a black-sand beach and a hike along a crater rim are just some of the day's highlights before you watch the night sky illuminated by the lava glow.

Leave Kona behind and travel south toward a national park that's listed as a World Heritage Site and recognized for its dramatic volcanic landscape and rich flora and fauna. Break for lunch at Punalu'u Bakery and stop to search for Hawaiian green sea turtles at a nearby black-sand beach.

Once at the park, take a leisurely hike along the crater rim. Here, in the lush rainforest, listen for the chirping of native birds and take in the fragrances of the tropical foliage. Duck on in to a lava tube and see for yourself where the lava once flowed before continuing on to Jagger Museum for a closer look at the volcanic landscape.

After enjoying a delicious dinner, take in the visual wonder of Kīlauea after dark. Bright colors illuminate the skies above and the glow of a lava lake can be seen through a gas plume above the Halema'uma'u Crater. Snap some photos before embarking on the return journey back to your hotel.
