Next come face-to-face with the giant monolithic limestone headland—the Rock of Gibraltar, which stands 1,400 feet (425 meters) from the ground. The legend says that the Rock was 1 of the Pillars of Hercules. Your guide explains the myth, when in ancient times this pillar, along with a 2nd pillar in Africa called Mons Abyla, marked the limit of the known world and encouraged maritime exploreies.
