Description:
Step into the underground world of Fiji's last cannibal tribe at the mystical Naihehe Caves in the heart of the Sigatoka Valley. Share a ceremonial cup of kava with a village priest, trek through the tropical jungle, and float down the river on a bilibili raft to a picnic spot among the trees.
Ride inland from Sigatoka through the valley known as Fiji's “Salad Bowl,” passing a patchwork of green farmland and gardens. Look for the ancient hill forts of Tavuni and Matanavatu as your guide shares the history of the mighty Tongan warriors. Traverse the shallows of the Sigatoka River on a bamboo bilibili raft, and walk to the home of the bete (tribal priest)—the traditional keeper of the caves.
The bete leads you in a traditional kava ceremony and offers his blessing for your journey into the caves. Make your way down a tree-shaded trail to the Naiehehe Caves. With the entrance concealed by jungle vines, it's easy to see why besieged tribes chose to hide in this subterranean fortress. Wiggle through the opening into the Grand Cathedral Chamber, where sparkling stalactites adorn the soaring ceiling and freshwater springs feed crystal-clear pools. Wander through the cavernous hall and learn about the cannibal rituals that took place here. A stone oven and a rock platform for sacrifices are evidence of the tribe's sanguinary rites.
Back in the light of day, set out for a gentle hike to the riverbank, where your raft awaits. Hop aboard for a leisurely cruise down the Sigatoka River, jumping in to swim or just taking in the scenery. Enjoy a flavorful picnic lunch complete with beer and tropical fruits before your return drive to the coast.
