Description:

Leave the beach behind and venture into the charming, rugged interior of Grande Terre, riding over off-road trails in a sturdy, 4-wheel-drive vehicle. Hop out to stretch your legs with guided hikes through the red dirt to crystal-clear streams and historic mining sites in the hills.

Set out from your hotel in an air-conditioned, all-terrain SUV and ride inland. Before long, you ditch the paved roadways in favor of off-road tracks that crisscross mountainous terrain. Drive along the base of the Montagne des Sources, where the packed red clay fades into green shrubbery at the banks of the Dumbéa River.

Hard-to-reach and remote locales are yours to explore as your driver negotiates the rough terrain, driving through areas where a regular vehicle can't go. Climb out and set off on foot to explore further, trekking through forested groves to reach brilliant green swimming holes where the river pools and deepens. Dive in for a refreshing dip, or just kick off your shoes and soak your toes in the cool waters.
