Description:
See the most powerful attraction in Washington, Mount St. Helens, notorious for its catastrophic eruption in 1980. Take an up-close look at the restored ecosystem and learn about the events of that historic and fateful day.
Lasting 9 hours, the eruption of Mount St. Helens in May, 1980, devastated 230 square miles (600 sq km) and turned the day sky into night, as a plume of dust and ash fell over Washington and beyond, depositing in a total of 11 states.
Journey out to Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and enjoy a tour led by a naturalist guide who tells you about the area's volcanic ecosystem, which has recovered since the '80s. Hike into the blast zone, just 5 miles (8 km) from the crater, and visit the Johnston Ridge Observatory to read eyewitness accounts from eruption survivors.
Enjoy a safari lunch while looking out over the dramatic landscape. Throughout the day, your guide shares stories about what happened and how the eruption started a new era of monitoring for active volcanoes.
