Description:

Get an intimate glimpse of both urban and rural Chiang Mai on this guided exploration by foot, taxi, and boat. Visit sacred Buddhist temples and vibrant markets, drift down the Mae Ping River in a longtail boat, and spoil your taste buds with a bowl of khao soi, the city’s legendary noodle dish.

Start your day at spectacular Wat Chai Mongkol, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the city, set along the banks of the Mae Ping River. Enter the 600-year-old grounds, passing statues of gilded deities to offer alms—a local Buddhist practice—to the monks in residence, and gain insight into the Buddhist religion.

Then stroll down to the Mae Ping River and board your awaiting longtail boat. Glide along this central artery of Chiang Mai, watching villagers fish and children play as your guide teaches you the history of the area.

Disembark and travel to a local farmer’s house, where you’re treated to khao soi, a famed regional noodle dish (slurping encouraged). Savor every last bite before heading to a nearby garden to learn about Thai vegetables and medicinal herbs.

Return to central Chiang Mai by songthaew—a common shared passenger vehicle adapted from a pickup truck—and spend the rest of the day perusing the wares at Warorot Market, and roaming the fragrant stalls of Ton Lamyai, a massive flower market stocked with fresh, colorful blooms.
