Description:

Venture into the rugged lunar landscapes, lava fields, and fertile foothills of Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano and Sicily’s most dominant geological feature. Visit the Silvestri Craters at 6,560 feet (2,000 m) above sea level and take in sweeping views as you trek across the rugged terrain.

Meet your bus in the center of Taormina and grab a comfortable seat, gazing out the window as you ride inland from the beaches of the coast to the island’s sun-baked interior. Watch the vegetation morph as you approach the volcano and begin to ascend in altitude, from lush and fertile citrus groves and woods of beech and chestnut to sparse pine forests clinging to the steep slopes.

When the burnt terrain becomes almost desert-like in appearance, with scraggly juniper bushes and scrubby astragalus blooming between the blackened gravel, your driver parks and you disembark to clamber across the charred pathway on foot.
