The murky water boils to life as a gargantuan crocodile launches past the surface and latches onto its lunch. Nearby, bright blue cassowaries squawk. With your combo pass to the Cairns Tropical Zoo and Hartley’s Crocodile Farm, catch all of Australia’s wildest stars in a single day.
Strike out on your own, or board a comfortable, air-conditioned coach bus from your Cairns or Palm Cove hotel for a morning filled with adorable koalas, slithering reptiles, and acrobatic lemurs. The Cairns Tropical Zoo hosts an impressive array of native Australian reptiles, birds, and mammals on nearly 15 acres (6 ha) of tropical gardens. See powerful wedge-tailed eagles, sea eagles, and barn owls take to the skies during the free-flight bird show. Feed kangaroos, get the chance to hold a koala, and check out the squeezing power of boa constrictors.
Leaving the zoo, enjoy a scenic 15-minute drive to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures. Spread out over 25 acres (10 ha), Hartley’s is filled with interpretive walks, wildlife sanctuaries, education centers, and—of course— lots of crocodiles. Take a boat tour of the lagoon, snapping pictures of the crocs' toothy smiles before heading to the feeding pit. Here, these massive reptiles get airborne, jumping out of the water to snag meaty treats .
Spend the rest of your day exploring the rest of Hartley’s, strolling over a mile-long (1.6-km) boardwalk or touring the crocodile farm before calling an end to your eco-adventure.
