Description:

Just a short drive from Adelaide, a pilgrimage to the world-renowned Barossa region is a must-do for food- and wine-lovers. Sip and snack your way through the valley, absorbing the arcadian atmosphere, visiting stone churches, and exploring picture-perfect country villages with a local guide.

Ride north from Adelaide, and watch the urban landscape fade to verdant rows of grapevines as you enter the Barossa Valley, where 21% of Australia's wine is produced. This area was originally settled by German immigrants, and traces of their influence can be seen in the charming architecture of older buildings and the Gothic spires of Lutheran churches—not to mention the valley's Old World-style culinary riches, which include fine cured meats and delicious cheeses.

Taste some of these local products when you stop for morning tea at TeAro Estate, a UNESCO-listed, 1850s-era barn on Williamstown's main street. Nibble pastries from a nearby bakery, and enjoy your first tastings of the day as your guide shares the history of the valley and its family-run vineyards. From there, make your way to Kellermeister in Lyndoch. In a brick tasting room, take in expansive views over the vines and the distant Barossa ranges as you sample the Wild Witch Shiraz and a refreshingly crisp apple cider.

Your next stop is at Maggie Beer's Farm Shop, where you can try various locally made specialty goods like olive oils and pasta sauces or peruse the selection of cookbooks. Head to the Wolf Blass Visitor Center, where a gourmet lunch platter and paired wines await. Two more winetastings round out your afternoon, at the 150-year-old Saltram Estate and the award-winning homestead of Pindarie, where the attentive staff offers entertaining stories along with generous pours.
