Description:

Ride along the rugged coastline of Acapulco’s Scenic Highway, stroll through the historic square and lively markets in town, and then head to the Quebrada cliffs to watch world-famous divers make death-defying plunges into the surf below.

Set out on the picturesque roadway that snakes above Acapulco Bay for postcard-perfect views over the rocky coves and azure waters of the Pacific. Stop off at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess Hotel for a tranquil stroll through the tropical grounds—this palm-framed structure is built in the shape of an ancient Aztec pyramid.

In Acapulco’s historic center, stroll across the zocalo plaza and notice the unusual Moorish and Byzantine influence on the architecture of the blue-domed Nuestra Senora de la Soledad church. From there, meander toward the Mercado el Parazal to scope out local wares, silver jewelry, and handmade crafts in the colorful market stalls.

Finally, head back to the coast and to the seaside cliffs of La Quebrada. Here, divers spring from vertigo-inducing heights, often plunging 100 feet (30 m) into the waves below, where the water averages a shallow 12 feet (3.6 m) deep. Hold your breath as they take the leap—these professional high divers and their fathers, uncles, and grandfathers before them have been performing this astonishing feat since 1934.
