Australia by Steve McCurry
There exists a famous image of Steve McCurry in Australia. It depicts the iconic photographer as a young man, propped against the wheel of a 4×4. Makeshift dustbin bag galoshes are taped up his legs, and his expression tells a story of both exhaustion and determination. The image of the photographer speaks volumes: We have always known that Steve will go to any length to get that perfect picture, but to be catapulted 35 years into the past reminds us of quite how long McCurry has been mastering his craft.
McCurry may have been capturing the faces and landscapes of Australia for almost four decades, but he still seeks to satiate his sense of curiosity in the land Down Under. So it was to Oz that Silversea sent him to explore; his passion for immersive travel leading the way, unraveling the country’s unique character.
No trip to Australia would be complete without at least a cursory nod to the lovely city of Sydney. But beaches and buildings aside, it was the very heart of Australia that McCurry wanted to uncover this time, and to speak with the ordinary men and women surviving in one of the worst droughts to have hit the country since 1902. Steve journeyed to The Flinders Range—over 1,000 kilometres west of Sydney—so travel deeper into the extreme Australian Outback. The fascinating geology of these mountains may make for harsh living conditions, but a handful of brave men and women call this beguiling Australian landscape home.
Steve’s images of life on the farm are not only a literal, geographical or topographical study, but they are works of visual art. He offers us, once again, a natural and complete experience of the landscape. From the bright lights of the big city to the unfiltered beauty of the Outback, Steve McCurry has uncovered authentic beauty at its source.
Capturing the Authentic Beauty of the World
Steve McCurry needs no introduction. He is most probably the greatest living photographer today. His iconic “Afghan Girl” image has captured the hearts and minds of thousands – the eloquence of her haunted expression, telling the world of her fate through her vivid green eyes – is simply stupendous.
So, when considering our new direction, Steve was a natural choice for us. He is a born storyteller with the soul of an explorer. His unique ability to capture what is left of the authentic beauty and truth in the world and express it with clarity and emotion is just brilliant. A McCurry image not only takes you on a journey, it inspires you to travel the world.
