HERE’S WHY

Leap of Fate: Shantoura & Nathan

Weddings

Leap of Fate: Shantoura & Nathan

The notion that love can find us in the most unexpected of places is certainly true for Shantoura and Nathan who met fatefully at their company’s gym. Upon first meeting, the pair kept things strictly professional. But from the outside looking in, there was no doubt that a spark — and plenty of good hearted banter — existed between the two.

According to Shantoura, “This guy would be hogging all the gym equipment! That’s how I met him. We would often talk in the gym, in that context, and then had a strictly professional friendship at work.”

Nathan remembers the same scene from his own point of view: “I was on the machine and she comes over, headphones blasting. So I asked her to take off her headset and made the introduction, and then she started asking questions about the machine. It was all very friendly and flirtatious, but not approaching the line.”

Despite their fast-growing friendship, romance wasn’t in the cards for Shantoura and Nathan just yet. Over the next decade, Shantoura would briefly relocate with the company from Atlanta to California and back again, although she didn’t decide to let Nathan in on her return right away.

“He said he noticed me in the hallway and thought ‘Huh, that’s weird, I know she left the state,’” recalls Shantoura. With Shantoura back in town, the two picked up right where they left off. But this time around, Nathan asked Shantoura on their first official date and, safe to say, the two haven’t looked back since. After a few more years of getting to know one another, Nathan finally popped the question in the comfort of their home and the wedding planning was officially set in motion!

First on the couple’s to-do list was to find a venue and destination. Shantoura and Nathan had never stayed at a Sandals Resort prior to their wedding weekend, so the two leaned into advice from friends who had. “All of our friends who were advocates of the Sandals brand always spoke so highly of their experiences. It was referred from people we trusted in our friend circle,” recalls Shantoura.

With their sights set on Sandals, Shantoura and Nathan had to further narrow down the decision to one of 17 Luxury Included® resorts.

“The harder decision was where do we go?” says Nathan. “Shantoura found two or three places. Barbados was one. Curaçao came up, and Saint Lucia. But she kept going back to Curaçao. When we looked up the island itself, we saw the beautiful architecture of the downtown and the bridge.”

Located in the Southern Caribbean, Curaçao is rich in natural beauty and features desert landscapes with rocky coastlines carved along azure waters. The vibrant-colored city of Willemstad, the island’s capital, serves as an epicenter for Dutch, English, Latin American, Asian, and Afro-Caribbean cultures. A testament to the profound melting pot that is Curaçao, “I love you” is often heard across the island in four languages, including Curaçao’s native language, Papiamento, making this the perfect locale for a destination wedding.

“For me, there was also curiosity in what they were developing through the Sandals brand,” says Shantoura. “Bringing development to that island is huge. I wanted to support that and I’m so glad we did.”

Sandals Royal Curaçao is one of the brand’s newest resorts, which brings the Sandals collection to a total of 17 Caribbean escapes. Featuring a variety of Sandals firsts, including a two-story infinity pool and eight brand-new restaurant concepts, Sandals Royal Curaçao offered Shantoura, Nathan, and their 12 wedding guests endless ways to revel in paradise.

“Without much information on the resort at the time, we were sold on the brand and then the island. When we finally did get to see the resort, it did not disappoint.” says Nathan.

With wedding planning top of mind, the couple wanted to ensure they had a trusted team that could bring their vision to life — even when they were thousands of miles away.

“We wanted a destination where there were people who were really well-versed at taking care of an event because when you’re at home, you can’t detach,” says Shantoura. “Sandals just naturally bubbled up to the top.”

From initial phone calls to the wedding weekend itself, the wedding team at Sandals Royal Curaçao was dedicated to exceeding the couple’s expectations. Upon arrival, Shantoura and Nathan quickly jumped into vacation mode with a detailed itinerary that was centered around exploring Curaçao. While the two adventured across the island — whether it was biking the Santa Barbara Estate, cruising around in a Mini Cooper, or taking a private e-bike tour through downtown Willemstad — the Sandals Weddings Team finalized all the details and began essential prep for the upcoming big day.

“My Sandals wedding planner made sure to cross every T and dot every I. It was very reassuring and affirmative, so that smoothed it out for me,” recalls Shantoura.

For the second half of their stay, Shantoura and Nathan resided in a Swim-up Butler Suite. Designed for maximum privacy, this luxurious corner suite featured dining and living areas, two bathrooms, a Tranquility Soaking Tub™ for two, and 270-degree panoramic views of the ocean, palm garden, and entire resort. With sunlight coming in from every angle, it is the ultimate hideaway for the two lovebirds.

Prior to the ceremony, the Weddings Team helped the couple host a beautiful sunset welcome party, complete with conch fritters, Blue Curaçao cocktails, and a trio of singers who covered classic R&B and neo-soul artists. A nod to the island’s rich culture, the team also used traditional brightly-colored dolls, known as Chichi (meaning “big sister” in Papiamento) as unique decor elements and gifts.

When the guests finally settled into their seats overlooking the ocean, the cool coastal breeze and warm air set the scene perfectly. Surrounded by 12 of their closest friends, Shantoura and Nathan said “I do” beneath a grand white structure, draped in billowing chiffon and secured with blooming arrangements of dusty pink roses and white hydrangeas.

newly married couple leaving their wedding

Among the most magical, heartfelt moments of the entire weekend was when the bride made her grand entrance. Unfortunately, Shantoura’s dad could not travel to join the couple, so Nathan decided to meet Shantoura half-way down the aisle to walk by her side. “I kept saying ‘Oh, my family isn’t going to be here,” reflects Shantoura. “But when Nathan came and got me in the center of the aisle, I was like ‘Wait, my family is here. You are my family.’”

Shantoura’s mother and best friend were also unable to attend, so the bride found a special way to carry them both with her. Keeping with the “something borrowed, something blue, and something old” traditions, Shantoura wore a brooch from her mom and a blue ankle bracelet from her best friend.

Once the two had officially tied the knot, the real celebrations began! Guests mingled over red and white wine, champagne and Mint to Be, and Berry Happy Together signature cocktails, before sitting down to an island-inspired dinner. Selecting from Sandals Splendid Wedding Menu, the newlyweds served a hearty Surf & Turf and snapper prepared by the resort’s world-class chefs.

“I don’t think anyone left food on their plate!” said Nathan. “Between the food, the drinks, the entertainment for the night — the reception was just awesome. You couldn’t ask for a better evening.”

Aschade_B04A1165-copy-1200x800-5b2df79

To align with the couple’s ethereal, and dreamy vision, the group sat for dinner at a long Captain’s table decorated in beautiful hydrangeas, roses, and blush pampas.
Despite all the excitement, Nathan and Shantoura didn’t hesitate to reflect on the exceptional service and hard work of the Weddings Team. “They worked tirelessly,” remembered Nathan. “They made it feel like we were the only ones on the resort for the ceremony and the reception. I couldn’t thank them enough and to see how happy it made her. It was beautiful, it was perfect.”

The rest of the evening followed a toast-music-dancing-toast-music-dancing pattern. As for the dance floor, let’s just say it was anything but quiet. Sparklers and glowing bistro lights illuminated the space, while the entertainment crew kept everyone on their feet. Rather than having one musical act, the couple reserved a DJ and a saxophonist! One highlight for the couple was when their friends brought in a soul train line and everyone broke out their favorite junior high school dance moves. “I was laughing, busting my gut, dancing,” laughed Shantoura.

To say the weekend was one of magic, celebration, and so much love, only begins to scratch the surface. When asked what advice they would give couples planning a destination wedding at Sandals Royal Curaçao, the answer came naturally to Shantoura and Nathan: “Live in the moment. Don’t waste your time worrying about the little stuff. You have one moment with your bride or groom — enjoy that. Live it up. Be in the moment. Be with your friends. Because when it’s all over, you have pictures but it doesn’t compare. When you focus on the memories you make, it’s a different experience.”

Much like carnivals elsewhere in the Caribbean, Curaçao’s carnival is a huge celebration of culture, music, and color. Carnival in Curaçao typically involves grand parades, catchy beats, lots of traditional elements, and exciting events that highlight the cultural and entertainment scene on this island. If you want to know more about the carnival in Curaçao, read on as we explore some of the key events, traditions, and everything else you need to know!

When is the Curaçao Carnival?

Curaçao Carnival, also known as Nos Karnaval, is usually held between January and February annually in the weeks leading up to Lent. The entire festival spans a period of around six weeks, during which time various events including parties, shows, competitions, and parades get underway on the island. The exact dates of carnival events in Curaçao vary on an annual basis, but the festival itself is always held at the same time of year.

The Curaçao Carnival 2024 dates have not been announced yet, but the 2024 carnival season is expected to take place from January 6, 2024 to February 24, 2024. The main carnival events in Curaçao will likely take place between February 9 and February 13, with the biggest parade likely falling on February 11.

History of Curaçao Carnival

Knowing the history of celebrations like carnivals can certainly help you to appreciate them a bit more. Carnival on the island of Curaçao dates back to the early 1900s. Venezuelans who visited Curaçao are said to have been the first people to have a celebration of this kind on the island. They held their festivities at a private, exclusive club in the year 1901. Word spread over time of the successes of this event and thus, things caught on quickly.

Carnival would soon reach the streets of Curaçao with the first celebration taking place in 1947. This was said to have been quite a modest occasion, with a simple procession. However, the simplicity would be short-lived. People loved this event and it soon transformed into one with more creativity at the center. Today, you’ll find a far evolved Curaçao carnival where creativity continues to thrive and cultural traditions remain a central focus. In its current form, Nos Karnaval continues to draw hundreds of people from around the globe annually to experience the authentic and extraordinary traditions of this island.

Expert tip: The best time to visit Curaçao is generally between the months of December and mid-April. Not only is carnival held during these months but it is a great time to check out some of the best restaurants in Curaçao and the best beaches in Curaçao.

What do people do at the carnival in Curaçao?

Festivities and events

If you’ll be attending Curaçao Carnival, there are lots of festivities and events that you can take part in. These events take place mainly in Willemstad (the capital) over a period of several weeks. Here are some of the most exciting events at Nos Karnaval that you can look forward to:

Horse Parade

The Horse Parade is a unique event that is included on the Curaçao Carnival calendar. This event most often happens in February. It takes place in downtown Willemstad and involves riders on horseback parading through the city. Many people look forward to this event as it is the first parade of the carnival season. Once you see the horses being led through the city with usually costumed riders, then you can be sure that the carnival is around the corner!

Tumba Festival

There are a few events that one must include in their Curaçao Carnival calendar, and one of these is the Tumba Festival. This event is at the heart of the carnival as it is one that revolves around tumba music. Tumba is a fusion of African, Latin, and Caribbean influences, and it is quite a distinctive sound. In Curaçao, there are competitions between the artists, specifically one where talented musicians vie for the title of Rei di Tumba (Tumba King or Queen). While enjoying Curaçao Carnival, this event is not to be missed if you really want a true taste of the festival.

Grand Carnival Parade

The Grand Carnival Parade (also known as Gran Marcha) in Curaçao is quite electrifying. This is the main event of the Curaçao Carnival and it is certainly quite the spectacle. Attending Gran Marcha can be fun whether you’re participating in the revelry or just a spectator. Gran Marcha usually starts at around 10 am. During this event, about 25-30 groups showcase their costumes as they parade through the streets. Each band has its own elaborate floats and music trucks that lead the revelers down the parade route.

The adult parade for Curaçao Carnival tends to start at Franklin D. Rooseveltweg and Jan Noorduynweg in the St. Maria neighborhood and end at Brionplein in Otrobanda. There’s also a children’s and teen’s parade that takes place during the carnival season in the lead-up to the main parade. Whether or not you choose to participate in the parades during the carnival in Curaçao, you’ll still be able to watch the festivities. Some of the best places to watch include along the main roads (through Marchena and Habaai). When selecting a spot to watch the parade, it’s a good idea to look for areas that offer paid parking and toilets.

Grand Farewell Carnival Parade

The Grand Farewell Carnival Parade is an exuberant spectacle that often leaves a lasting impression of the vibrant spirit of Curaçao. This event is known as The Marcha di Despedida and it takes place on the eve of Ash Wednesday. The Marcha di Despedida marks the culmination of the carnival season. As this is a wind-down event, people enthusiastically immerse themselves in the festivities, making it a memorable experience for all. There is one final event following the Farewell Parade, the Closing Celebration of Carnival Season, which takes place at the Carnival Festival Center. If you still have some energy left, it’s definitely worth attending to bid farewell to the Carnival season in style!

Carnival Pageants

Much like some of the other Caribbean islands, Curaçao has some major pageants that are part of its carnival celebrations. This includes the Election Teen Carnival King & Queen event, the Election Carnival Queen, Prince & Pancho, and the Election Youth Carnival Queen, Prince & Pancho. These pageants usually take place in the month of January at the Curaçao Festival Center. The winners of these competitions are largely seen as some of the most popular faces for the carnival season. With their win, they are not only publicly crowned but also receive lots of other prizes. The winners of the carnival pageants in Curaçao hold their titles for a year, until the subsequent carnival festivities.

Expert tip: There are many awesome things Curaçao is known for apart from its exciting carnival celebrations. On the more romantic side, Curacao weddings are quite popular. If you stay at Sandals' all-inclusive resorts on this island, you’ll have amazing options for wedding venues and even a free wedding (special conditions apply!).

Carnival Carnival traditions

Carnival can bring with it feelings of pure euphoria, particularly when you really get into the events and traditions that come with the season. Curaçao Carnival boasts numerous authentic traditions, setting it apart from many other carnivals worldwide. These customs contribute to the uniqueness and allure of the celebration and many have been passed down through the generation. All of this adds to the depth and authenticity of the festival.

Among the traditions that highlight the island’s cultural heritage, the jump-ups are undoubtedly a spectacle you won't want to miss. These are street parties that seem to pop up all over the place around carnival time. Some of these will seem spontaneous, but if you keep an ear to the ground you’ll be able to find out what’s happening, and when. Carnival jump-ups in Curaçao and elsewhere are all about revelry, dancing, and enjoying sweet carnival music.

Another one of the popular traditions that come with Curaçao Carnival is the Burning of King Momo. Some people consider this to be quite a euphoric event. This particular element of Curaçao Carnival takes place towards the end of the festivities and symbolically signifies the conclusion of the revelries. Once this happens, then you know it’s time to hang up your costume! The good news is you can look forward to more Curaçao Carnival as this is an annual event.

Other important Curaçao Carnival tidbits

If you’re planning to participate in Curaçao Carnival or any other carnival event in the islands, it’s essential to come prepared. If you want to join a costumed band, you should do this well in advance of your arrival on the island. The costumes in some bands tend to sell out quickly, so once you’ve spotted something you like (on the internet or elsewhere), then go ahead and make the provisions to reserve it. Most bands will require a down payment for your costume. You’ll need to pay the full price before you can get your costume in hand.

If you won’t be jumping with a band but still want to watch, there are some things to keep in mind as well. Wear light and comfortable clothing, suitable for the warm weather and all the dancing. Whether you decide to join a band or not, don’t forget to pack sunscreen, a hat or sunglasses, some cash for food, drinks, and other expenses, and a water bottle to stay hydrated and ensure you can fully enjoy the festivities! Some carnival bands may provide water bottles and other carnival memorabilia, but it’s always a good idea to check beforehand. Another option is purchasing reusable carnival cups (these help with littering). These cups can be found at various locations on the island, including Sambil, Bugs Bunny Snèk, Dutch Treat Pietermaai, 24 Uur Uit de Muur, and Pompstation Barber.

Expert tip: Carnival is an exciting time to visit Curaçao, but there are lots of amazing things you can get up to on this island no matter what time of year you go. Here are some of the most incredible things to do in Curaçao.

Symbolic nuptials, although they are not legally recognized by your state or country as a binding contract, allow for greater expression of a couple’s personality and values. This relatively newer concept has been gaining popularity due to its flexibility and the ability to fully personalize.
To ensure the big day is exactly as envisioned, all couples have their own dedicated Wedding Team. From wedding planning to event execution and everything in between, the Sandals’ Wedding Team is committed to bringing every wedding vision to life.

2. Stobá: A hearty stew that can be made with a variety of meats, such as goat (kabritu), beef, or chicken, stobá is another of the island’s staple dishes. It is often served with rice or funchi, a local cornmeal dish.

Local dishes to try in Curaçao

There’s a world of food to try in Curaçao and some of this island’s traditional dishes can put even the most dedicated foodie to the test. This daring list includes things like iguana soup, cactus soup, and many other options. We’ll focus on some of the most popular local dishes you simply must try in Curaçao:

Keshi Yena - This is considered the signature dish of Curaçao. Interestingly, the preparation of this dish starts with a ball of cheese, usually edam or gouda. Then, the cheese ball is stuffed with beef, chicken, pork, or minced vegetables like onions, capers, tomatoes, pickles, and olives. The meat used in this dish is typically spiced.

Fried Plantain - A favorite on this island that consists of thinly sliced plantains that are fried until gloriously golden brown. This dish is also popular on other Caribbean islands.

Pastechi - A popular fried pastry that can include chicken, beef, tuna, vegetables, ham, cheese, or tuna filling. This is usually served as a breakfast dish but it can also be eaten as a snack. Pastechi is most often crescent-shaped.

Stoba - Hearty and delicious, stoba is a stew that is made with papaya, beef, or goat. The type of meat used in this dish varies, but papaya is the signature ingredient that adds sweetness to this dish. Carrots, peas, and other ingredients are often added as well.

Guiambo - This soup has a bit of a slippery consistency due to the okra and it includes a medley of seafood. Commonly, canned or fresh oysters, cooked shrimp, and fish are added to Guiambo. Small pieces of funchi (listed below) are sometimes added to this soup once it is prepared.

Kadushi - Made out of cactus, kadushi is another one of Curaçao’s traditional dishes. The spines of the cactus are removed, then the cactus is skinned, sliced, and prepared. Typically green in color and slightly slimy - you can find this nutritious soup at the Old Market in Willemstad.

Funchi - This savory dish is made out of cornmeal, and is comparable to polenta. It is also similar to another dish known as tutu, although black-eyed peas are not used in the making of funchi. Funchi is usually served as a side dish, but it is sometimes placed into soups.

Inside the Grand Opening of Sandals Royal Curaçao, Where Amazing Comes Together

40 Years of Sandals

Inside the Grand Opening of Sandals Royal Curaçao, Where Amazing Comes Together

It’s a question you have to ask. For 40 years, Sandals Resorts has continually re-imagined the luxury Caribbean experience. Every catchphrase has been used in an effort to describe the innovations as they’re rolled out — all of them true. Sandals has changed the landscape, moved the needle, thought outside the box, and created all-new boxes.

So how, after 40 years of too-good-to-believe innovations, could Sandals possibly raise the bar even a fraction more?

On June 24th, Sandals raised it by a mile.

GO-SCR

Pictured: Aerial view of Sandals Royal Curaçao during the resort’s Grand Opening Celebration on June 24th.

The grand opening celebration of Sandals Curaçao Royal was literally unlike anything that had ever been seen – here or anywhere else. It’s no wonder. The celebration came as an exclamation point to a project that has been 10 years in the making, which made weekend livelier and sweeter than anyone could have expected.

But before the dancers, bands, and fireworks were set loose, the grand opening celebration began with an everyday occurrence on the most beautiful westward-facing beach in the Dutch Caribbean: the magnificent hues of a tropical sunset. On this evening, they happened to cast a glow over the all-new Awa Seaside Butler Bungalows and Kurason Island Poolside Butler Bungalows. It was as if the sun’s rays wanted to be first in line to welcome the 16th and newest property in the Sandals Resorts portfolio. The well-wishers came from everywhere.

Aerial-view-of-the-brand-new-Sandals-Royal-Cura

As staff mingled with local dignitaries, and those dignitaries mingled with guests, and guests mingled with globally recognized entertainers, the sounds of a Kachu horn stopped everyone in their sandy footprints. Generations of Curaçaoans have heard the same sounds as pronouncements of important events on the island — births, bountiful harvests, and moments that demand a celebration.

_DSC6385

Pictured: The sound of the Kachu horn commemorates the sun set at Sandals Royal Curaçao.

The call of the horn drifted out over the all-inclusive resort, and out to sea. The anticipation in the tropical air elevated. Daylight gave way to stage lights. There, wearing a soft blue sport coat to casually align with the popular color of Curaçao, Sandals Resorts’ Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart, spurned the use of a script and spoke his final words from the heart.

“We’re going to put on one crazy party for you to celebrate 10 years in the making. Have the time of your life. Welcome to Sandals Royal Curaçao.”

Sandals-Royal-Cura-ao

Pictured: Sandals Resorts’ Executive Chairman Adam Stewart addresses a spirited crowd of resort guests, local dignitaries, island partners and international press at Sandals Royal Curaçao’s Grand Opening Celebration.

And that kickstarted the resort’s tagline, “Where Amazing Comes Together,” into a before-your-very-eyes celebration of culture, colors, and the return of Carnival to the island for the first time in three years. It took a decade to dream up this all-inclusive resort in Curaçao. It only took a matter of hours for people to live the dream on this beachfront 44-acre swath of Curaçao.

Iconic steel-pan artists coaxed guests into rhythmic movements, some of them into the direction of a first-of-its-kind cocktail bar reminiscent of the island’s iconic Divi tree. Guests looked skyward to Sway Performers moving like palm trees on towering 20-foot-high flowers.

Steel pans by the local legend, Konkie, and accompanying band, The Guayaberas, gave way to mashups between drummers, DJs, and renowned violinists CJ Opus and Clari Montergo. Tunes by Caribbean music producer extraordinaire, DJ Menasa, were met by the iconic sound of Nelson Braveheart’s saxophone, with pop-up acts from cultural performers from Folkloriko Ambiente Kultural. The fiery hues of the sunset were brought to life by the Phoenix Curaçao Theatrical Fire Show, mesmerizing the audience with spectacular dance choreography and elaborate costumes.

Every moment during the celebration, down to the blue-colored drinks and diversity of performers, signified the long-awaited marriage of Sandals and Curaçao. To introduce the bi-level Dos Awa Infinity Pool, which overlooks the sea from two levels, guests saw a first-of-its kind synchronized swimming routine from Curaçao’s Swordfish Synchronized Swimming Team.

The stars emerged, overhead and at eye level. Fashion designer Stan Herman has seen just about everything at worldwide showcases during his illustrious career. He’d come for the unveiling of the new Anniversary Collection of uniforms he curated for Sandals Royal Curaçao. On this night, though, he stood in complete awe of the never-befores on the resort property around him, all the while beloved Dancing with the Stars couple, Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy, made their rounds through the party and the dance floor.

The pure Curaçao energy would have made Vegas blush.

Just when the energy couldn’t possibly be lifted any higher, a global phenomenon managed to shift all attention back to the stage: Blue Man Group. The trio’s powerful drumbeats and spectacle of paint was chosen as a headliner for good local reasons. Their flourish of blue ties to what many consider the most colorful island in the Caribbean.

An even more extravagant affair, Carnival made its grand return to Curaçao for the very first time since 2019, choreographed by the award-winning Dushi Aventura with a kaleidoscopic, parade of close to 100 drummers, dancers, stilt walkers and iconic front line costumes, all handmade especially for Sandals Royal Curaçao’s grand opening. An appearance by Raynor “Raey” Lauffer, known as the Tumba King, authenticated the performance as an official event of Carnival with his winning Tumba song. In true Carnival fashion, the parade was followed by the dynamic brass band, Percussion Creative Dynasty.

Blue Curaçao flowed freely from the bars surrounding the Dos Awa Infinity Pool straight to the Decade Disco and Dessert After Party at the Beach Club. Because where else would you want to hear the vibrant music from Grammy Award-winning DJ Tracy Young, while also sensing the calming sounds of the sea 10 steps away? And on the beach, the dancing lasted longer than it does at most wedding parties. A good party does that to people, especially when the feet are in talc-smooth sand.

With any celebration comes the post-celebration. At Sandals Royal Curaçao, that meant the sun came up the next morning and lit up the colors of the sea. It provided the perfect backdrop for the stage that had been reset for yet another landmark occasion. Two visionaries, Stewart and Herman, stepped up to announce the unveiling of the new “Anniversary Collection” Team Member uniforms, a project that the legendary designer began more than a year ago.

For Sandals, the new look is another bridge connecting the company’s 40-year legacy with a look forward.

This is how the bar is raised by a mile. In re-thinking luxury, Sandals also enhances what nature has provided, like the beautiful views and warm culture. You embed them into the entire guest experience.

At this moment, the beach at Sandals Royal Curaçao is open and warm. It’s a stage all by itself. The view from the incredible Dos Awa Infinity Pool will never change. The joy and energy from the grand opening does not disappear. It increases.

In his comments on opening night, Stewart mentioned something else without any prompting or preparation: “We are excited to give you a glimpse into the future of Sandals Resorts.”

The celebration started on June 24th, but as it is with the rising and setting of the sun, the celebration of living has no boundaries. So, for guests at Sandals Royal Curaçao, the time of your life is just beginning.

Curaçao is the biggest island in the ABC chain, which also includes Aruba and Bonaire, along the southwestern coast of the Caribbean Sea. On this Dutch island, you will discover some amazing beaches that are home to rich marine life and thriving coral reefs, which makes it the perfect snorkeling destination. Curaçao is known for the wonders of its exciting marine world.

In this article, you will learn more about some of the best snorkeling spots in Curaçao and Klein Curaçao (an uninhabited island situated six miles south of Curaçao).

Insider tip: Curaçao has steadily increased in popularity over the years with international travelers. So much so that the island became Sandals’ latest destination with the all-inclusive Sandals Royal Curaçao resort!

The best snorkelling spots in Curaçao

Curaçao has more than 30 beaches in total, but the best beaches in Curaçao can be found in the sheltered bays along the island’s west coast. To the west of the country’s capital, Willemstad, you can find some of the best locations for swimming and snorkeling. We’ve listed some of our favorites below:

1. Playa Lagun

A short drive from the town of Sabana Westpunt will take you to Playa Lagun, a beach found nestled in a cove along the west coast of the island. If you’re still a bit new to snorkeling, the calm waters of this beach are the perfect place to have your first big snorkeling adventure. Early morning trips may yield special rewards! There is a greater chance that you’ll get to swim with the green turtles at that time of day.

Snorkelers will enjoy the turquoise waters and the array of snapper, parrotfish, moray eels, and other sea creatures that have made this beach their home. Visibility is also decent at this location, just another reason you won’t want to miss out on visiting this beach while in Curaçao.

2. Little Knip Beach (Kleine Knip or Playa Kenepa Chiki)

Along the north coast of Curaçao lies Little Knip Beach, also known as Kleine Knip or Playa Kenepa Chiki. On this lovely beach, you’ll appreciate the amenities and services offered, such as the parking lot made for your convenience and a rental service that offers umbrellas, snorkeling equipment, and even beach chairs.

Once you get to the beach, you can hop into the water and head to the left side of the bay, which is the best place to snorkel. Beneath the waves, you’ll find many varieties of coral, barracuda, angelfish, octopus, pufferfish, and more. Watch out for rocks along the way and hard coral buried beneath the sand.

3. Playa Piskado (Playa Grandi)

Playa Piskado, also known as the “Fisherman’s Beach”, is a popular snorkeling spot where vibrant coral reefs can be found below the surface. Thanks to the wide variety of fish on this beach, it is a favorite for fishermen looking for the catch of the day. You’ll get to be a part of the experience as you dive beneath the waters and swim among the fishes and the friendly sea turtles of Playa Piskado.

After exploring the ocean, you can lounge under the shady manchineel trees and, on weekends, indulge in some treats from the snack bar. For a small fee, you can rent beach chairs and access the restrooms on-site. Overall, this is a great beach spot to spend a couple of hours snorkeling, swimming, and lounging on the beach.

4. Playa Forti (Sweet Alice)

Playa Forti is a pebbly beach that is only a swim away from Playa Piskado. Unlike Piskado, it is usually not very crowded, which gives you plenty of room to swim amongst the moray eels, squid, sea turtles, and spotted drums.

The coral reef can be found about 30 feet below the surface. It is mainly made up of cup corals joined by tube and elephant ear sponges. Cliff jumping is popular in this area as the beach has cliffs ranging from 40-75 feet tall. You can watch the cliff jumpers when you’re done snorkeling, or you can give it a try yourself if you find somewhere safe to do so.

5. Director’s Bay

Director’s Bay is a beautiful beach in the southern part of Curaçao. Director’s Bay was privately owned until the 1980s when it became public property. Now, Director’s Bay is one of the best locations for snorkelers, divers, and beachgoers to enjoy.

This beach is located between the Tugboat Wreck and another dive site called Small Wall. Its unique location makes it a cozy home for a wide variety of marine animals such as barracudas, frogfish, pufferfish, seahorses, angelfish, and many more. Snorkelers and scuba divers alike will certainly enjoy the perks of this coral stone beach.

6. Tugboat

Tugboat is a shipping wreck that sank more than 30 years ago in Curaçao. Since then, vibrant corals and tube sponges have made its surface their home. Since Tugboat lies only about five meters below the surface, it can easily be explored by snorkelers and scuba divers.

You will see lots of shrimp, yellowtail, octopus, seahorses, and scorpionfish swimming in and around this shipwreck. Excursions such as reef snorkel tours are exciting adventures led by fun, experienced tour guides that can tell you all about the island and Tugboat.

7. The Blue Bay

This quiet, white sand beach on the west coast of Curaçao is a great place to unwind, relax and enjoy the day. For a small entrance fee, you can lounge on the beach or go snorkeling and catch a glimpse of sea animals such as blue tangs, squid, crabs, wrasses, groupers, and sea turtles.

If you’re an experienced snorkeler, you might want to check out the drop-off at Blue Bay where you will find some wonderful coral formations and even more colorful fishes. This beach is equipped with a restaurant and restroom facilities.

8. The Blue Room

The Blue Room is a cave in western Curaçao that gets its name from the effects of the sunlight as it refracts off the water’s surface. The effect makes you feel like you are diving in a sea of the bluest water. It’s best to visit this cave in the late afternoon, at about 4-5 p.m., to catch the full vibrance of the sun’s rays on the water.

You will enjoy the wonders of this picturesque cave and come face to face with fishes such as the Glassy Sweepers. You can take a boat trip to the Blue Room, swim there, or even hike to the location.

9. Playa Kalki (Alice In Wonderland)

Playa Kalki is a wonderful snorkelling site in Westpunt, Curaçao. It should take you less than an hour to get to this beach from Curaçao’s capital of Willemstad. Playa Kalki is an ideal location for a fun-filled and relaxing day of snorkeling and scuba diving.

Parking is free and this beach houses a snack bar and a dive shop. Be sure to wear some solid shoes for the steep path to the beach. About 30 feet into the ocean lies a reef that you can explore and find fishes and other sea life including stingrays, frogfish, parrotfish, and barracuda.

10. Klein Curaçao

Klein Curaçao is a small, tropical island about six miles off the coast of the main island of Curaçao. If you’re looking for good snorkeling in Curaçao, this is a great place to go. It only takes about two hours to and from the mainland and boat tours are usually provided from the nearby Caracas Bay and Spanish Waters.

This island remains uninhabited and untouched, which adds to its authentic nature. Snorkelers can enjoy the clear waters at this snorkeling spot as well as the sights of butterflyfish, flounders, bonefish, sea turtles, coral reefs, and many other aspects of marine life.

Bonus: What else should you try in Curaçao

Though snorkeling is one of the amazing things Curaçao is known for, there’s a lot more you can get up to while on this charming little island. Here are some of the interesting things you can do when you’re not busy exploring the ocean:

Explore Willemstad

Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, is a big, bustling city that is split into four quarters: Otrobanda, Punda, Scharloo, and Pietermaai. Punda to the east and Otrobanda to the west are joined by the Queen Emma Bridge, and many of Curacao’s most exciting attractions can be found in these areas.

Curacao Willemstad Aerial

The preservation of the Dutch architecture and the colonial structures of Willemstad has been recognized by UNESCO. In December 1997, this capital city was officially listed as a World Heritage site. You can enjoy Willemstad by taking sunset sailing trips, doing Aquafair tours, and even swimming with the dolphins. Day tours around the city will prove to be both fun and educational. If you’re feeling adventurous, a half-day tour to the Sheta Boca National Park may offer just the kind of excitement you are looking for.

Swim with dolphins at the Dolphin Academy

Did the idea of swimming with dolphins pique your curiosity? Well, this fun activity is a very real possibility in Curaçao. During your Curaçao vacation, you’ll be able to set up a tour where you can interact with these calm, friendly sea creatures that love humans just as much as we love them. The Dolphin Academy in Willemstad can take you out for a fun, safe swim in the ocean with dolphins. People of all ages, including children and the elderly, can participate in this activity.

At Dolphin Academy, a guided dolphin swim can last about two hours. The cost of this experience varies as it depends on the type of excursion that is chosen. Regardless of which package you select; you are guaranteed to have a fun time with the dolphins.

Check out Shete Boka National Park

Along the north coast of Curaçao lies the rocky terrain of the Shete Boka National Park. This park covers about ten kilometers of land and is a great location for those who love adventure. The park features limestone cliffs that line the north coast of the island and has an underground cavern where crashing waves turn into huge splashes on the land nearby.

The Shete Boka National Park is commonly used as a nesting ground during turtle nesting season. The park is protected to allow these turtles to nest safely. For a small fee, visitors can enter the park and learn more about its history through guided tours.

Hike Christoffel National Park

Christoffel National Park is a large, luscious, green park in Curaçao, which is quite the contrast to the smaller and rockier Shete Boka National Park nearby. In fact, Christoffel is the largest park on the island and has a rich biodiversity.

Curacao Christoffel National Park

There is so much to do and see at this park! You’ll find a wide range of flora and fauna here, including the national white-tailed deer. The Savonet Museum is also housed in the park, and there are at least seven hiking trails for you to explore. Plus, there are weekly activities, events, and guided tours that you can participate in when you visit.

Expert tip: If you love the outdoors, spending time at the Christoffel National Park is definitely one of the things to do in Curacao that you won’t want to miss out on.

The best time to snorkel in Curaçao

Generally, the best time to visit Curacao is between the months of mid-December and mid-April, which is the island's peak season. There’s usually a lot more going on the island around this time, which can make your vacation more exciting overall.

Curacao Snorkeling Turtles

If you’re looking to spend most of your time in Curaçao snorkeling, though, January to April would be the best time for this particular activity. While Curaçao is usually pretty dry, especially compared to some of the other Caribbean islands, there is a lower chance of rain during the first half of the year. Temperatures are also much milder between January and April compared to the summer months, making this the best timeframe for outdoor activities like snorkeling. Trade winds from the east, particularly in the spring, also tend to cool things down a bit.

The tropical climate of this island means that temperatures remain warm throughout the year. As the temperature doesn’t drop below 79°F, the water is fairly warm too. This means you can enjoy snorkeling in Curaçao at any time of the year!

Snorkeling in Curaçao is a beautiful adventure!

With beautiful beaches, friendly natives, amazing weather, and rich flora and fauna, you simply can’t go wrong with a visit to Curaçao. The island offers some of the most unique snorkeling experiences in the region. You’ll feel like you’re floating inside a stained-glass window if you visit the Blue Room, and the majestic turtles you’ll encounter while snorkeling in Curaçao will make the trip more than worth it. Plus, you can follow up your underwater adventures by exploring some of the historical sites in Willemstad or even hiking at the Christoffel National Park. Adventures abound in Curaçao!

When visiting this island for a snorkeling trip or a vacation in general, make it a point to stay at an all-inclusive resort in Curaçao, which can be an experience on its own! All-inclusive resorts often offer professional-quality snorkeling equipment at no additional cost, so you can pack a lot lighter! Staff at the resort will be happy to guide you on the best snorkeling spots and the proper use of the equipment. On top of that, you’ll enjoy quality inclusions that extend beyond snorkeling, such as unlimited gourmet dining and cocktails, day and night entertainment, land and water sports.

The combination of snorkeling in Curaçao with the worry-free environment of an all-inclusive resort makes for an unforgettable stay in an island paradise!

Aside from amazing diving, there are lots of other things Curaçao is known for. So, after you’ve had your fill of the many incredible scuba diving sites the island has to offer, there will be more activities to engage in around the island.

Ahead of your Curaçao vacation, take a look at some of the best dive sites in Curaçao where you can experience dramatic drop-offs, amazing wreck dives, or easy-breezy shore diving.

The 5 best dive sites in Curaçao

If you’re planning a Curaçao dive trip, it’s a good idea to get familiar with the best dive spots before you get there. There are so many great places to dive in Curaçao, including shore diving and boat diving sites, so we took some time to detail five of the most popular sites and what you can expect to find at each:

1. Watamula

Best for intermediate and advanced divers

The Watamula reef is off the northern tip of Curaçao and can only be accessed by boat. The boat ride to Watamula won’t take very long, and once you’re there, you can enjoy an open water drift dive. This kind of dive allows scuba divers to drift along the ocean currents, which gives the sensation of ‘flying’ underwater. You will be dropped off in one spot at the start of a dive and picked up in another by the dive team.

Watamula is a great choice if you’re looking to see the best of what diving in Curaçao has to offer. Sightings around this dive site include a vast number of diverse and impressive hard coral formations, several soft coral species, and a range of sea life including parrotfish, triggerfish, angelfish, porcupine fish, chubbs, crabs, shrimp, sea turtles, stingrays, moray eels and more. Divers who are especially lucky may also spot the occasional whale shark making its way through this area.

2. Alice In Wonderland (Playa Kalki)

Best for divers of all skill levels

The Alice in Wonderland dive site in Curaçao is also known as Playa Kalki. This is a popular shore dive easily accessible from the beach. The Alice in Wonderland site is loved by both snorkelers and scuba divers.

Curacao Scuba Diving Playa Kalki

This great dive site is especially easy to find — there’s actually a large rope connected to the dock that divers can follow to get to the reef. The rope spans about 30 feet and makes this site a fun feature for beginners. The reef at Playa Kalki has a drop-off from 30 feet to 100 feet. Divers can expect to see a variety of marine life here including trumpetfish, pufferfish, frogfish, moray eels, tangs, parrotfish, stingrays, and more.

3. Mushroom Forest

Best for intermediate divers

The Mushroom Forest gets its name from the large, hard coral heads that can be found there. The coral heads have a mushroom-like appearance and make this dive site in Curaçao really stand out from others.

Curacao Scuba Diving Blue Room

You’ll need to travel by boat if you plan on doing the Mushroom Forest dive while in Curaçao. To get there, you’ll simply have to take a short boat ride off the west coast, or a longer one off the east coast if you’ll be staying on that side of the island. The Mushroom Forest is protected by large surrounding cliffs, so you don’t usually have to worry about strong currents. While diving here, you can expect to see marine life including snapper, lobster, groupers, porcupine fish, moray eels, sea turtles, and more. There’s also an other-worldly cave known as ‘The Blue Room’ next to the Mushroom Forest that is also worth exploring while there.

4. The Superior Producer

Best for advanced divers

Selecting the best dive site to visit in Curaçao truly comes down to deciding what you’re hoping to see and the type of experience you’re looking to have. Divers looking for a shipwreck scuba spot will love the Superior Producer. This dive site appeals to more experienced divers as the wreck itself is about 100 ft (30m) beneath the surface.

Curacao Scuba Diving Superior Producer

The Superior Producer is a 400-ton, 165-foot long cargo ship that sunk in 1977 off the coast of Curaçao. The sinking of this ship was a major loss as it was filled with merchant goods, including perfume, whiskey, and clothing. The ocean has totally claimed this cargo ship, and, today, its remains are covered with the most beautiful coral. Among these artificial reefs, divers are likely to spot snapper, jacks, barracuda, tarpon, sea turtles, and more. The Superior Producer is less than 500 feet off the coast of Otrobanda, which is on the west end of Curaçao.

5. Tugboat

Best for beginners and all skill levels

Tugboat is a popular diving site in Curaçao thanks to the shipwreck found in this area. This dive site is off the coast of Tugboat Beach on the southwest coast of Curaçao.

Curacao Scuba Diving Tugboat

The Tugboat site is appealing because it will allow even novice divers to get up close to the wreck. This is one of the more shallow wreck dive sites which makes it ideal for both snorkeling and beginner scuba diving. The wreck at this location was intentionally sunk and sits about 15 ft (5m) beneath the surface of the water. Tugboat is located near a pier, and some of the regular sightings here include tarpon, scorpionfish, yellowtail snapper, octopus, seahorses, parrotfish, shrimp, lobster, and sometimes nudibranch. The shipwreck at this location is a sight to see as it’s covered with tube sponges and a variety of soft coral.

The best time to scuba dive in Curaçao

Curaçao is a great place to dive year-round but there are certain times of the year when you might have an even better experience. The dry season for the island (from April to November annually) is generally the best time to visit Curaçao.

Curacao Scuba Diving Bait Ball

During this time the weather tends to be more consistently clear and calm with fewer chances of rain showers that might interrupt your diving plans. Water temperatures during the dry season are usually warmer (around 85°), while the rest of the year sees water temperatures around 79°. Ultimately, Curaçao is warm and sunny most of the time and you’re likely to have a good dive trip regardless of when you go.

Bonus: Other things to do around Curaçao

Curaçao is a beautiful Caribbean island that stands out for its tropical Dutch flair. While in Curaçao, there are lots of tours you can go on to explore the sights and see why this island continues to gain popularity with people from around the world. Here are some of our favorite attractions:

Visit Willemstad’s historic buildings

Vibrant and colorful, Willemstad is an amazing Caribbean city to stroll around in. This is the capital of Curaçao and the architecture in this area has a distinct Dutch colonial style. There are lots of historic and cultural landmarks in the city that are worth visiting, including Fortchurch, which is an exceptionally large, bright yellow colonial church that was built in 1769. The Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge is another stand-out feature of this Caribbean city; it was built in 1888 and opens regularly to accommodate passing boats. This floating bridge connects two of the four quarters of Willemstad - Punda, and Otrobanda. Both are great areas to explore and shop in while in Curaçao.

Klein-Curacao

The beach on Klein Curaçao island is probably the one you see in your beachside imaginings ahead of potentially booking a Caribbean vacation. This beach is untouched, gorgeous, great for snorkelling, and super private. So private that you’ll need to hop on a boat to get there! Klein Curaçao is also known as “Little Curaçao”, and it is a tiny, uninhabited island 15 miles off the southeast coast of Curaçao. It takes about two hours each way to get to Klein Curaçao from the mainland.

Bonus: Explorers will love these two small hidden beaches in Curaçao

Playa Gipy

Near the village of Westpunt, you’ll find Playa Gipy which is a small, wild and rocky beach. This isn’t a very touristy beach, and for many visitors it can be difficult to find. In fact, sometimes the people who stumble upon this beach are those who go looking for the lighthouse in this area, so in that sense getting to Playa Gipy can be quite the welcome surprise. In calm weather, you can dive in this location. It is only recommended to do so with a guide.

Playa Santu Pretu

Santu Pretu translates to black sand, and that is just what you’ll find on this Curaçao strand. This beach is relatively secluded with the surrounding natural elements mostly untouched. The road leading to Santu Pretu is closed, but you’ll be able to get to the beach with a 10 minute walk or by boat. There are no beach facilities here, but the snorkelling is pretty awesome.

You’ll get the most out of your time on this island paradise at this time with most of the events happening, including Curaçao Carnival which culminates with a grand street parade in March.

You’ll also have plenty of opportunities around this time to check out some stand out attractions and events in Curaçao like the Ostrich Farm (includes a safari ride!), Plein Air Curaçao; a large scale painting event that’s open to the public, and even one of the island’s biggest food festivals, Curaçao Culinair in April.

Read on to find out more about the best time to visit, and some of the amazing things you’ll be able to do during your well-deserved vacation in Curaçao!

Curaçao in a nutshell

Curacao

Curaçao is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is also included in the ABC island chain along with Aruba and Bonaire. Arriving in Curaçao, you’ll land at the Curaçao International Airport also known as Hato International Airport. The airport is about 6 miles northwest of the capital, Willemstad. Willemstad is bright and colorful with a Dutch colonial style. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Also read: ‘What is Curaçao known’ for’ and ‘54 amazing things to do in Curaçao’ to get to know this island a bit better.

The population of Curaçao stands at around 150,000 people, and the island measures 270 square miles. Part of the southern Lesser Antilles, Curaçao is 37 miles from the Venezuelan coast. The highest point of the island is Sint-Christoffelberg in the northwest at around 375 meters, but other than that, the island is mostly flat. Weather wise, there aren’t any set seasons in Curaçao. In fact, the most people who attempt to separate Curaçao’s climate into seasons have been able to come up with are summer, windy, and somewhat rainy. On average though, daytime temperatures in Curaçao ranges from 78° to 88° F annually.

When is the best time to visit Curaçao: Seasonality

Many travellers hoping to escape winter temperatures make their way to Curaçao where the island’s minimum day time temperature is 78 Fahrenheit. Though the best time to visit Curaçao is between December and April, this island is known for having great weather year round, so technically, there really isn’t a bad time to go.

Arrivals Curacao

Weather wise, February and March have been recorded as the months to visit this island. Of course, when planning a vacation, the actual time most people go depends on their schedules. If you can’t get to Curaçao during December or April, you can try during the shoulder or low season which both have their own set of benefits. Here’s what you need to know about the various travel seasons as they relate to Curaçao:

Peak Season (December to April)

Peak season or high season tends to be the busiest for Caribbean islands including Curaçao. During this time many people choose to travel to get a break from the cold of northern climates, or for family trips during school breaks. The weather in Curaçao is normally at its best during these months. This means resorts and restaurants can fill up quickly and so can the best beachside spots. Traveling during peak season has its benefits including amazing weather and an exciting event calendar that you can take advantage of if you book early enough.

Shoulder Season (May to August)

The months of May to August are considered the shoulder season and can be a good time to travel if you’re looking for an experience that’s somewhere in the middle of what you’d get in the low and high seasons. This means there probably won’t be throngs of people on the beaches and other attractions, but the streets won’t be completely tourist free either. The weather is still great in the shoulder season and the tourist volume is not as large as in the peak season, which can work out well if you want to relax and also socialize and check out some cool events.

Low Season (September to November)

Making a booking will likely be a breeze in the low season which is usually between September and November. This is generally a quieter time to travel and in some places this can have to do with less than ideal weather. In Curaçao though, the weather is almost always sunny. In fact, September is typically the warmest month in Curaçao. Traveling during the low season can sometimes lead to scoring deals on airfare or accommodation which can be a plus.

Pro tip: It can be hard to predict when you’ll have the occasional rainy day during your vacation, and a good way to ensure you’ll have a good streak of sunny days to do all the things you’ve got planned is by booking a vacation that’s at least a week or two long.

The weather in Curaçao

Curaçao is influenced directly by the north-east trade winds and is in comparison to some other islands considered a dry island with a relatively low level of rainfall recorded annually. There are a few months that tend to be rainier, but even in these months rainfall tends to be somewhat irregular. On average, day temperatures in Curaçao range from 78 to 88° F. This is good news for vacationers who want to enjoy sunny temperatures in a place where it’s still more than possible to cool off with the steady trade winds, or by dipping into the ocean on one of many magnificent beaches.

Temperature Curacao

Even in a mostly sunny destination, it’s worthwhile to pay attention to weather patterns to make the most of your vacation. While Curaçao has a mostly dry climate, in mid-October and mid-December there’s usually a mild increase in precipitation with 3.30 inches being recorded in October, 3.80 inches in November, and 3.90 inches in December. This means around this time you can expect a rain shower or two, but these usually are not prolonged.

Humidity wise, there’s high humidity throughout the year in Willemstad with the most humid month being November with 77.1%, and the least humid being August with 71.6%.

Rainfal Curacao

Curaçao’s windiest month is June, with March and February following close behind. June records wind speeds of around 11.9 knots (13.7 MPH or 22 KPH), which is the equivalent of a moderate breeze. June also records the island’s maximum sustained winds, particularly early in that month up until mid-June with top sustained speeds of 16.4 knots. Still, this remains in the moderate category, which means you won’t have to worry about Curaçao being too windy. Temperatures on the island will be breezy and warm, and conductive for a relaxing island getaway.

There’s always plenty of sunshine in Curaçao on the regular, but August is the sunniest month on record with just about 9.3 hours of sunshine per day on average. In a calendar year, there’s typically an average of 8.3 hours of sunshine per day in Curaçao. In compassion, London has 4.1 hours of sunshine as a daily average while New York City has 7 and Los Angeles has 8.9 hours.

Stunning shores on this island include Playa Kenepa, Playa Kalki, Playa Cas Abou, Playa Lagun and Playa Jeremi, a little cove with beautiful views. Of these beaches, Playa Porto Mari, Playa Kalki and Playa Lagun are all great for diving. These are included on the list of Curaçao’s 65 amazing dive sites that you can enjoy year round as visibility is almost always amazing. Water temperatures in Curaçao are usually between 78.8° - 82.4° F year round.

The months that are best for diving in Curaçao are Mid-December to Mid-April. These months also coincide with the peak season. Overall, most of the year tends to be dry in Curaçao which adds to the great visibility when diving on this island. Dive experts recommend the months of September and October if you want to see coral spawning first hand.

Insider tip: Water sports options will be endless on this island of pristine beaches if you stay at an all-inclusive resort like Sandals Curaçao where even free scuba diving trips are included in your stay once you’re certified (max. two tanks per day per guest, professional equipment included).

In the mid-16th century, the Dutch took over from Spain and in 1651, the first set of Jewish immigrants came to live in Curaçao. Britain also joined in the fight but ultimately the Dutch reigned supreme in a ruling, which greatly transformed the island. To this day, this ruling has influenced the way of life of the people.

There is no right way to experience Curaçao, because every traveler can make the island their own, while embracing its authentic, unforgettable spirit.

Fun fact: A bi-lingual island (Papiamento, Dutch, English and Spanish), Curaçao is a melting pot of cultures which makes things so much more exciting for visitors!

3. Easy to Get to

The beauty of traveling to Curaçao is that it's easy to get to, even from Europe. Direct flights run daily from popular hubs like Miami, Charlotte, New York City, California and Toronto in under 5 hours. Plus, depending on the time of the year, round-trip flights are relatively inexpensive.

Getting to Curaçao is easy, and just 30 minutes away from the airport, getting to Sandals Resorts is even easier. With complimentary transfers for all guests and complimentary private transfers in luxury vehicles for top tier accommodations, Sandals Resorts takes care of your vacation experience the moment you set foot on the island.

4. Colorful beyond belief

Curaçao’s colorful capital, Willemstad.

When you think of street art, New York and Miami may come to mind, but just wait until you see Curaçao. When visiting Willemstad, Curaçao’s capital, colorful murals fill building walls with designs ranging from geometric shapes to realistic portraits and political commentary.

Nena Sanchez, a popular local artist, painted murals of her famous blue women across the city. When visiting, try and see how many you can spot!

5. Hidden Foodie Gem

While many people travel to explore new landscapes or layout on a tropical beach, many Sandals Resorts guests travel for something else—the food, and Curaçao offers a treasure trove of culinary flavors and cuisines. When staying at Sandals Resorts, you can expect a level of variety, quality and creativity run by world-class chefs who are as authentic as the cuisine they serve.

When exploring beyond the walls of the resort, a local dish you can't leave the island without trying is Keshi Yena, whose name in Papiamento, the local language on the island, literally means "stuffed cheese." This Curaçaoan main dish, consisting of a large round ball of cheese, gets stuffed with spiced meat, typically chicken, and is served steamed or baked.

6. “Fore” the Love of Golf

Golf Course

Located on the west end of the island, the new Sandals Curaçao will be characterized by expansive, hilly terrain and home to the destination's top golf course, Old Quarry. Designed to complement Curaçao’s beautiful hills and valleys, the Pete Dye-designed 18-hole golf course spanning 6,920 yards will challenge players of all skill levels. Best of all, when staying with Sandals, you might even spot a few resident iguanas lounging on the greens while you tee up with your partner.

7. Adventure Awaits

ATV-safari-adventure

Curacao, with its idyllic blue waters and lush views also has rough and rugged terrain perfect for adventure travelers. If outdoor adventures are a bit more your speed, opt for ATV rides through Curaçao's desert, mountain biking the countless trails or animal encounters at the Ostrich farm. Curaçao offers unlimited land activities for travelers to enjoy.

When staying at Sandals Resorts, travelers can enjoy the beauty of the destination and explore beyond the walls of the resort.

8. Lover’s Paradise

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway to add to your list, make sure Curaçao is in your top three. With soothing sounds of the ocean, picturesque landscape views, and year-round perfect weather, Curaçao is the ideal destination to amp-up the passion with your significant other.

When looking for a romantic resort, look no further than Sandals Resorts. Rooted in love and made for couples, Sandals Resorts will offer travelers an ideal locale to spice things up. From couples massages to candlelight dinners and secluded spots for intimate relaxation, Sandals Resorts are specifically designed for romance.

9. Set on a beautiful coved beach

Sansals Curaçao Beach

Curaçao, known for its colorful Instagram-worthy buildings, is also the island of 35 beaches. With that many beaches on an island that spans 180 square miles, travelers will find a beach for every mood, vibe, activity, and waters to match the country’s famed blue liqueur. Whether you're opting to snorkel and explore the depths of Curaçao’s underwater world or want to spend a lazy afternoon working on your tan, visitors won’t have to worry about slim pickings at Sandals because watersports are always included.

It’s no surprise that loyal Sandals Resorts guests return year after year. The secret? Founder and Chairman Gordon "Butch" Stewart knows a great beach when he sees one. All Sandals Resorts are westward-facing because the waters are calmer and the beaches are stunning. Sandals Curacao will be home to a white-sand beach that stretches 1,500 ft (450 meters) and is bordered by a crystal-clear and serene swimming lagoon.

10. A Divers Paradise

A list of reasons to visit Curaçao would not be complete if it did not mention the best reason of all—the diving and snorkeling! Whether you're a novice diver or have an open water certificate, you'll find a dive site perfect for you. With plenty of shipwrecks, wall dives and underwater cliff faces, you'll be able to explore Curaçao’s underwater world. Think sea turtles, eagle rays, sharks, eels and fish unique to Curaçao, like the yellow-spotted sand goby and the spotted four-fin blenny. Like all Sandals Resorts, once the resort is ready to welcome guests, expect the Sandals PADI-Certified scuba diving experience to come with the very best equipment, staff and unbelievable dive sites!

An exciting opportunity for couples in Curaçao!

Behind the Bar: A closer look at Sandals’ curated collection of Caribbean Rums

For #TalkLikeaPirateDay, we spoke to Sandals Beverage Specialist Troy King on what makes Caribbean rum so special.

Sandals is proud of its Caribbean heritage: the clearest water, bright sun, its friendly people with their infectious sense of fun, and of course the rum.

Across all Sandals beach resorts, our Food and Beverage team aim to showcase the very best of what the Caribbean has to offer its guests. From using local produce in our cooking to curating a cocktail menu that reflects the vibrancies and nuance of each island.

The Caribbean is famous for its rum history, but many don’t realize that each island yields a distinct variation of the classic.

At each resort, we make it so you can explore the Caribbean by never leaving the bar. Our cocktail menus have been carefully created to show off the character of each of island’s rum, to savor their unique flavors and deep aromas.

And the best news is, when you stay at Sandals – all of these are available to try at no extra cost. The drinks are always on us!

Sandals Beverage Trainer Troy King explains more about the Caribbean Rum you can taste at Sandals:

Why does the Caribbean produce such excellent Rum?

“Plain and simple, it is all about the sugar. Sugar cane is part of the grass family and it loves exactly what the Caribbean can deliver: Sunshine, rain, and heat.

When you start with great molasses, sprinkle in a little of the Caribbean culture, then let it mature in oak barrels stored in the warmth of the islands, you have a recipe for excellent rum.”

What’s the differences between Caribbean Rum?

Appleton, in all of their expressions we have, comes out to meet you. You know you are drinking a Jamaican rum when you have Appleton. The use of copper stills along with Jamaican molasses greets you at every taste.

Chairman's Reserve in Saint Lucia is clean and crisp, easy to drink, and highlights the local flair in a bottle—while Antigua’s English Harbor in Antigua is dark and rich with great rum flavors and a good finish on the end.”

Troy describes Westerhall Plantation Rum from Grenada as “smooth and unique because it has some spice to it” –no coincidence then, that it hails from Grenada which is also known as the "Island of Spice" due to its production of nutmug and mace crops.

Bajan Mount Gay is over 300 years old – and the process hasn’t changed much. The sugarcane is harvested and refined into a peak grade of molasses. The flavor created is “bold but balanced” says Troy – but there’s hints of vanilla and mocha, making it a fine base as a cocktail.

How should we drink rum?

Many rums need to be ‘aged’ for around a year. So, when it comes to the glass – is there a particular way to make the most of it? Fittingly for a Pirate, Troy says there’s no rules with rum.

“I always say the best way to drink anything is how YOU like it. Not how the "experts" do, not your drinking buddy but, the way you like it.

“Rum is a spirit that makes excellent cocktails from a Dark and Stormy to a Kingston Mule. I personally drink mine with just a couple of ice cubes.”

Do You Need A Passport To Visit Curaçao As A U.S. Citizen?

If you’re planning a visit to Curaçao, you’re probably asking yourself some questions like: do I need a passport to visit? The quick answer is yes. However, if you are a U.S. citizen, you won’t need a visa. That simplifies vacationing planning a whole lot!

Curaçao is part of the ABC island chain, which also includes Aruba and Bonaire. There are so many amazing things that Curaçao is known for! That list begins with its gorgeous capital city, Willemstad, a town that also happens to be a World Heritage site. Then, there are the exciting excursions, incredible dive sites, and amazing all-inclusive resorts in Curaçao.

Without a doubt, this island is a great choice if you want a getaway filled with blissful moments, lots of ocean time, and even more adventure. Read on for everything you need to know about getting your travel documents together for your visit, plus some experts tips on things you can do while in Curaçao!

Do I need a passport when flying to Curaçao?

All visitors, including those traveling from the U.S., will need a passport when visiting Curaçao. The usual rules as they pertain to passport validity also apply, that is, your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. You must also have at least one blank passport page per passport, per traveler and your passport must not be more than 10 years old.

If you’ll be traveling to Curaçao by air, you may also need to provide proof that you will be returning to your country of residence or transiting to another destination. Other information that may be requested includes confirmation of hotel reservations or additional details relating to the purpose of your visit. As part of the immigration process, you may also need to show that you have enough money to cover your stay and any other expenses.

Curacao

Insider tip: The perfect vacation takes planning, and that planning should include selecting the best accommodation. In Curaçao, you’ll find lots of hotels and resorts to choose from including all-inclusive properties for couples like the Sandals Royal Curaçao!

Do I need a passport when taking a cruise to Curaçao?

Having a valid passport is important when visiting Curaçao regardless of how you get there. While you may be able to use other travel documentation besides your passport to re-enter the U.S. from Curaçao, particularly if you’re going on a closed-loop cruise, you should ask your cruise ship representatives about stipulations before attempting to visit the island on a cruise without a passport. With that said, it’s always a good idea to travel with your passport in the event you need to get back home via other means, like air travel, due to an emergency or some unforeseen circumstance.

What are the visa requirements for Curaçao?

Curacao-Car

If you’re from the U.S. or the U.K., you won’t need a visa to travel to Curaçao. Specifically, this information applies to citizens of those countries who plan on visiting the island for tourism purposes for a period of up to 90 days. There are other nationalities that can also travel to Curaçao without a visa, but citizens of some countries, including Cuba, Venezuela, and Haiti need a tourist visa to visit Curaçao.

If you fall into a category of travelers that requires a visa, it is important to apply for your visa at least one month ahead of your trip to ensure you get your travel documents in time. You can apply for a Curaçao tourist visa through representatives of the Netherlands in individual countries. Some residents of the Dominican Republic, China, and India may also need a visa to travel to Curaçao if they are not already in possession of a valid multiple-entry visa to the U.S., Canada, or the Schengen countries (Europe). Russian nationals residing in the Baltic States with alien’s passports issued by Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania can travel to Curaçao without a visa.

Expert tip: Do you see a beach vacation in your future? The Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao might be just what you need. There are lots of activities on this island to keep you occupied, including sunbathing on any of the best beaches in Curaçao!

Can I use a passport card or other identification to travel to Curaçao?

Passports

Passport cards

A passport card is a less costly alternative to a passport book. It serves as both an official national identity card and travel document. While it is valid for land and sea travel into the U.S. from Canada, Bermuda, Mexico, and the Caribbean, a passport card cannot be used for air travel into or out of the U.S. You should also check with your cruise line to confirm that your passport card will be accepted for entry at the ports you’ll visit.

Passport cards are less expensive than conventional passports (a passport card for one adult costs $55 as opposed to a passport that costs about $110), and they are also less bulky so they can fit in your wallet. The downside to passport cards is that there isn’t any room for stamps or visas.

Trusted Traveler program cards

Trusted Traveler programs are an initiative of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). With these programs, frequent international travelers may become members to enjoy perks like expedited lanes at U.S. and international airports (where available), expedited vehicle/pedestrian entrance into the U.S. or Canada, and other benefits that can make traveling more convenient. Members of these risk-based programs are pre-approved. Some Trusted Traveler programs are listed below:

  • NEXUS: Generally used to enter the U.S. from Canada by land, air, and sea;
  • SENTRI: Generally used to enter the U.S. from Canada and Mexico by air or land;
  • FAST: Generally used to enter and exit the U.S. from Canada and Mexico with a commercial truck.

Membership cards from some Trusted Traveler programs can be used as identification when cruising to certain destinations, but these cards cannot replace a passport when traveling to the Caribbean.

Enhanced driver’s license

Documents

An Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) is an official document under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) that can be used as both a driver’s license and for travel purposes, such as when exiting and re-entering the U.S. This document has added security features and technology which increase the safety factor for travelers.

An EDL is a low-cost alternative to a passport. With an EDL, you’ll be able to re-enter the US from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean islands. You can find out which islands are included by contacting an application center near you. EDLs are currently only being issued by the states of Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington State, and they can only be used at land and sea borders. An EDL is not valid for air travel.

Bonus FAQs!

I’m stuck in Curaçao without a passport. What do I do?

A lot can happen while on vacation, including your passport getting lost or stolen. Regardless of how it happens, this scenario can be a complete nightmare. If it ever happens to you, don’t panic. The first thing you’ll need to do is alert your hotel or resort of the situation. If you’re staying at a Sandals resort, staff at the front desk will be happy to help. Here are the steps to follow if you misplace your passport while in Curacao:

  1. Once you’ve brought the situation to the attention of staff at your resort, the next step will be to make an official police report. Get a copy of your report as you will need it to obtain an emergency passport.

  2. Get in contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate-general. You’ll need to repeat some of the same information documented in the police report or provide a copy of the report to the embassy or consulate. You will also need to provide confirmation of an airline ticket, which serves as proof of your urgent need to travel.

The address of the U.S. embassy in Curaçao is provided below:

  • U.S. Consulate General Curaçao
    • J.B. Gorsiraweg 1

    • Emergency After-Hours Telephone: +(599)(9) 843-3066 (from Curaçao); +1-(503)-420-3115 (from the United States)
    • Fax: +(599)(9) 461-6489
    • Email: ACSCuraç[email protected]
  1. Fill in the necessary application forms for your emergency passport. In this case, you’ll need to complete and sign the DS-11 passport application form.

  2. Next, complete a statement in reference to your lost passport. This needs to be done via Form DS-64.

  3. Pay the required application fees. The cost for applying for an emergency passport is US$110, which is the same fee attached to a new passport application.

Do I need vaccinations before entering Curaçao?

When traveling to Curaçao, people who are older than 6 months of age and are coming from areas with a yellow fever risk may need to show proof that they’ve been vaccinated against Yellow Fever. Vaccination certification documents sometimes need to be shown upon arrival. If you do not have this vaccination due to medical issues, you will need to show an official document of exemption.

What are my currency restrictions when traveling to Curaçao?

There aren’t any specific currency restrictions for entry or exit for visitors to Curaçao. Amounts exceeding $20,000 Netherlands Antillean guilders (about $11,164 United States dollars) must be declared.
